Garmin to unveil nuvi 700 at IFA?
Details are few and far between on this one, but the folks at GPSAndCo are reporting that Garmin is going to expand its nuvi line even further at IFA this week, with the hereto unheard of nuvi 700 apparently set to make its debut. According to the site, this one will boast a widescreen display and a design similar to the 200w and 250w, but with features more in line with the nuvi 660. That would include, they say, live traffic information and an FM transmitter, among other features. While that's up in the air at the moment, we should know one way or the other soon enough, with IFA officially getting underway on Friday.

And once again I update my scorecard to keep track of all those different Nuvi models out there.

Does it...
...have integrated sandpile avoidance capabilities?
...have WiFi?
...have integrated stupid avoidance capabilities?
...have Lots-O-Room for Media?
...have integrated river avoidance capabilities?
...blend?
'sigh' yet another product from a (once) reputable company that lacks the power to amaze me, and probably has an obscenely high price-tag.
Chris @ Aug 29th 2007 4:25PM
the 700 is for the price tag!
paragraph @ Aug 29th 2007 4:33PM
@chris
for $700 i can buy a mac mini and a power inverter, and probably have enough scratch to get me most of the way there to a GPS reciver.
there is no need to spend all that money on a single function device, even one that kinda does more than one.
paragraph @ Aug 29th 2007 4:35PM
edit: BTB i know $700 is not the price of the unit, i was just making a point ;)

I'm still paying down my Nüvi 600 series. Only 40 more payments to go...as long as I don't get lost..on out-dated map data...

@ mr hinenstien

thud @ Aug 29th 2007 4:29PM
I don't know, is it called a "nuvi"? They should put that on the display somewhere?
McGinley @ Aug 29th 2007 4:36PM
Ill spend ANYTHING to defend me from Maposaurus!!!!

\m/ GARMIN! \m/
But seriously, maps suck
But more seriously, wtf, google maps much?
What are girlfriends and assholes who call *shotgun!* for but to read directions for you?

Garmin needs to license it's tech to cell phone manufacturers. If my iPhone had a GPS and the screen was slightly wider (ie, took up some of the space of the black bands on the side) .. All I would need to do is get a stand for it and I would use it as an in car GPS.
paragraph @ Aug 29th 2007 4:50PM
garmin does make GPS recivers for PCs and PDAs, just not for Phones, most of them have GPS now anyways, it's just ungodly expensive for service.

I'm guessing only a few of you here actually use one of these.
It's not just a one function device, it can also play mp3s, work as a picture viewer (though I don't know anyone who uses that), work as a bluetooth speakerphone for your cellphone, it's got a built in fm transmitter and so on. The only thing it doesn't do is play video, but it's a car navigation device, not a PMP for crying out loud.
And mac mini? You can't be serious. The GPS receiver alone would cost at least 100 dollars, and you conveniently forgot to add a screen as well. You'd be better off using a laptop, but then you'd need someone else in the car to handle it, which defeats the purpose.

Well, I love my nuvi 660.
So this is supposed to be the same thing but with rounded edges on the case? I must be missing something.
Edward @ Aug 29th 2007 8:10PM
I own a nuvi 350 and LOVE it.
A few years ago, these things were thousands of dollars. Like any piece of technology, the price has/is come down drastically. You guys underestimate these little devices.
In a form factor the size of an iPod, these things empower users to know EXACTLY where they are on anywhere in North America. The POI database preloaded on these things also covers 'most' of every single business/park/road/etc. in North American. I think that's pretty amazing.

so, I'm guessing if the 700 series is coming out to replace the 600 series, then a 400 series will be around the corner to replace the 300 series.

i think a wireless alltunes music store is in order...
320Kbit no-DRM mp3s for 1/3 of what apple charges is where it's at.
RyanTV @ Aug 29th 2007 8:37PM
in the wrong post... wooo it's been a long day... never mind me guys
Dustin @ Aug 30th 2007 3:09AM
Hopefully you can program this one for multiple destinations and it will plan the best route for all in the best order
joe @ Aug 30th 2007 12:43PM
the 700 series will be replacing the 600 series, you should also see a price drop in the 600's before the launch. because of tom toms launch of the 920 you should probably see the release of this come a little bit closer to the middle or end of september. it will have the newer case style just like nuvi 250W. there will also be a nuvi 800 series which should include voice recognition of which the release time will be this year before the holiday season starts
